Analytical workflow combining correlative microscopy with in-situ capabilities
Analytical workflow combining correlative microscopy with in-situ capabilities
Jan/24/2019
Demonstration of complimentary in-situ structural, chemical and mechanical testing of wood
In this application example, a workflow to microcharacterize (in 2D and 3D), fabricate micropillars and perform
in-situ
nanoindentation testing to investigate the mechanical properties of beechwood using one single instrument is presented. The
TESCAN RISE
(
FIB-SEM
) is able to produce ultrastructural images that can be correlated with chemical maps generated by
Raman microscopy
that clearly show how the composition and structure relate to one another. Furthermore, the same platform can be used to prepare micropillars at site-specific locations to perform
in-situ
mechanical testing through nanoindentation. All these datasets can be easily correlated to see the relationships between structure, composition and mechanical properties. The workflow presented here can be applied to study a range of other organic and inorganic materials.
