First TESCAN microscope delivered to Slovenia

Jun/03/2016
In 2015, the Institute of Cell Biology at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana purchased the VEGA3 microscope, the first TESCAN´s scanning electron microscope installed in Slovenia. This new equipment is to join the other research instruments including light and electron microscopes already existing at the institute.

The development of electron microscopy in Slovenia started in 1965 with Prof. Dr. Nada Pipan. Within years, the institute developed a broad spectrum of methods in both light and electron microscopy. Besides the classical ultrastructural analysis of tissue, the research is oriented in labelling of cell components on lowicryl and cryosections, as well as in electron tomography showing the Z dimension in transmission electron microscopy.  More recently, the use of correlative microscopy combining the benefit of both light and electron microscopy has been also introduced into praxis.

“Our main focus is on epithelial biology, with a special interest in the epithelium of urinary bladders. Electron microscopy is the most suitable method to study membrane components which are involved in barrier function of this organ and, how these components are synthesized through cell organelles. Lately, we have also been oriented in differences between normal and cancer cells, searching for specific targets to attack cancer cells. By means of electron microscopy, we have found the specific dispersion of Golgi apparatus with differentiation of normal cells of urinary bladder epithelium and the characteristic structure of the apical membrane whose function is to maintain the blood-urine barrier. In relation to that, we also found greatly suppressed endocytosis in these cells which distinguish them from cancer cells with relatively high endocytotic activity. These basic findings are now used to adjust the strategy of bladder cancer treatment. Part of our studies are involved in discovering new methods for treatment of bacterial cystitis“, said prof. Veranic, Head of the Institute of Cell Biology at the Faculty of Medicine.

We are very keen to deliver the system to this university. This is, however, just the beginning. During the celebrations of 50 years of electron microscopy in Slovenia, a memorandum has been signed between TESCAN and the University of Ljubljana. The essence of this partnership is the mutual cooperation in the field of joint development of applications, publications in peer review journals, joint application to projects and other activities which will serve to fuel the research collaboration, including the organization of seminars and workshops”, said Dr. Vratislav Košťál, Head of Life Science applications in TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING.

"The VEGA3 SEM joins another SEM system from the year 1987. “TESCAN is a new player in the field of microscopy in Slovenia. This is attributed to the favourable ratio between the quality and price compared to other companies,” said prof. Veranic.

We are very pleased with the opportunity to have further close cooperation with the University of Ljubljana. The relationship between our company and the customer doesn’t end by delivering the equipment. We have a strong application and R&D departments ready to provide very flexible support not only during the pre-sale stage but also afterwards. Shared experience and knowledge of even tiny details about the application of the customer is beneficial for both parties and helps to extend analytical limits for particular and specific needs.  This memorandum demonstrates our firm will for mutual cooperation and forge customer-ship into a long-term partnership,” said Václav Janištin, Head of Corporate Marketing of TESCAN.
