Concrete and asphalt are well-known building materials that degrade when exposed to environmental conditions. For instance, in the case of concrete, moist, salt or even CO2 can lead to corrosion of the steel reinforcement used in concrete and other structural damage such as cracking and spalling. It is therefore important to identify and quantify the intrinsic parameters of these materials that determine their durability or resistance to environmental deteriorating agents. Micro-CT is a non-destructive analytical technique suitable to quantify for instance porosity and permeability of concrete and study the damage caused by these external agents. In this application example, we study and quantify the intrinsic parameters of concrete and asphalt using a multi-scale approach and the TESCAN CoreTOM.
