Upgraded Lab now features TENSOR STEM and SOLARIS 2 FIB-SEM
Tempe, AZ — TESCAN Group has reopened its existing Tempe R&D facility, adding a laboratory showcasing TESCAN’s latest electron microscopy technologies. The lab features the TESCAN TENSOR STEM and the newly launched Solaris 2 FIB-SEM, offering customers hands-on demonstrations and specialized support in sectors such as Materials Science and Semiconductor R&D, Failure Analysis and Process Monitoring.
The opening not only marks an important step in strengthening TESCAN Group management’s ability to serve clients locally, but also highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation. “With the opening of our Tempe lab, we’re able to provide customers with direct access to our STEM systems portfolio,” said J. K. Weiss, of TESCAN Tempe. “This allows them to experience firsthand how our cutting-edge technology addresses the challenges they face in reliably characterizing materials at the nanometer scale. And with our local world-class R&D group, we’re looking forward to working with customers to collaboratively develop the next generation of STEM applications and techniques.”
Symposium Showcases Global Expertise
To mark the Grand Opening, TESCAN Group hosted a symposium at Arizona State University on October 24, bringing together leading global experts in electron microscopy. The event featured presentations from renowned figures such as Dr. Rafal Dunin-Borkowski from the Ernst Ruska-Centre, who spoke on the role of the TENSOR STEM system, and Dr. Colin Ophus from Stanford University, who explored new dimensions in phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy.
Other talks included Dr. Peter Crozier from Arizona State University, discussing the use of in situ TEM and artificial intelligence in observing atomic-level surface dynamics, and Dr. Alain Diebold from the University of Albany, who addressed the application of TEM/STEM to semiconductor materials characterization.
All presentations from the symposium have been recorded and are available online for further learning and exploration.

Introducing J. K. Weiss
J. K. Weiss brings 40 years of experience in transmission electron microscopy and is recognized for his innovations in materials characterization applications and techniques. Holding multiple patents, Weiss has been involved in the creation of several advanced STEM and 4D-STEM techniques, especially EELS and EDX spectrum imaging and precession-enhanced strain measurement. His leadership of the Tempe lab ensures that it will be a center for innovation and customer collaboration.
“The Tempe team’s deep understanding of both the technology and the microscopy market puts us in an ideal position to lead this region as the premier solutions provider,” said Jason Marshall, TESCAN Sales VP. “We are excited to offer local access to our latest systems, which will allow clients to see the direct impact these tools can have on their toughest challenges.”
Hands-On Client Engagement in Key Industries
The Tempe lab offers direct access to TESCAN Group’s full suite of solutions, particularly the TESCAN TENSOR STEM and Solaris 2 FIB-SEM, enabling advanced material characterization and metrology. This hands-on approach provides clients with the opportunity to evaluate how its technology can address their unique challenges.
“By offering advanced demonstration and collaboration infrastructure in the new Tempe Lab, we provide our clients with a hands-on experience that showcases the real-world impact of our technology,” said Bruno Janssens – Chief Strategy Officer of TESCAN Group. “This not only strengthens our relationships with existing clients but also allows us to demonstrate how our solutions can support innovation in their respective industries.”
About TESCAN GROUP
TESCAN was established in 1991 and has grown from a 4-5 engineer start-up initially, to a company with more than 700 employees working from more than 10 facilities in 8 countries. We are a leading player in charged-particle optical instrumentation, including Scanning and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM & STEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and X-ray Computed Tomography (micro-CT), with more than 4000 instruments sold and operational in more than 80 countries.
In 2013, it expanded by merging with ORSAY PHYSICS, a French global leader in customized focused ion and electron beam technologies, and in 2018 by acquiring XRE, a Belgian innovator in the field of Dynamic and micro-CT technologies. A further, more recent milestone was the acquisition in 2023 of TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING and all its subsidiaries by CARLYLE, a US private equity company. TESCAN GROUP is headquartered in Brno, Czech Republic, where most of our instruments are expertly assembled, tested, and shipped to customers across the globe.
