The present work focused on studying the nano-structural organisation of wing scales of butterflies (T. opisena) aiming to gain deeper insight into the formation mechanisms and functional properties of these structures and their relevance in evolutionary processes. High-resolution imaging of the wing scales were acquired by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) using the TESCAN MIRA3.
- Ultrastructure of the wing scales. (A) A single wing scale of the green ventral wing area of T. opisena.(B to D) Different high-magnification images of different crystallites. Each crystallite is a single gyroid network.
