Reciclagem

The basic principles of Automated Mineralogy based on the identification and quantification of solid phases by their composition determined from a combination of X-ray spectra (EDS) and backscattered electrons (BSE) enables its wide use in many other areas besides the mining industry and earth science research.

  • The recycling of waste materials is one of the trends of recent years. Different types of waste can be a valuable resource of metals, which together with growing environmental awareness contributes to an increasing interest in this field.
  • The recycling industry faces similar issues to the traditional ore processing in counteracting low recoveries of metals.
  • Similar problems enable application of similar solutions such as SEM based automated mineralogy.
  • Detailed knowledge on modal composition and texture of phases present in the waste or in the product often provides clues for the choice of optimal recycling method or for improvement of the currently applied disposal process.
  • Automated mineralogy systems are able to evaluate not only the metallic components but to a certain extent also plastics with mineral based fillers in one step unlike other methods.
  • Automated mineralogy systems are suitable for application to most inorganic wastes like electronic scrap and combustion products.
