In this work morphological studies and electromechanical characterisation of fish scales from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) revealed how green carp are sensitive to their surroundings and show how fish scales – natural polymers – can be used as highly sensitive piezoelectric materials in high-sensitive and high-speed devices with great implications for biomedical applications. The scales were analysed – among other techniques – with the TESCAN SEM VEGA3 LMH equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyser.
